handspring seems to be doing things right. they just got fcc approval for two new models – both w/ web, sms, and phone capabilities (gsm). the only thing it seems to be missing is the new palm i705’s always on mail capability (using mobitex like the palm vii’s, not cdpd or gprs).

i haven’t really been keeping up, but this is rather nift as well: handspring is now giving away visorphones for free w/ the purchase of visor and service plan.

oh, i forgot to post that i finally remembered to call my degree counselor tuesday afternoon. i had stopped by on campus last week to make sure that my credits had transfered in from my summer spanish class at smc, but hadn’t gotten a chance to call in earlier. so now i’m officially graduated, no longer a student, and joining the ranks of the unemployed. woo!

from the ap

Dmitry Sklyarov, 27 and ElComSoft Co. Ltd. of Moscow were charged with five counts of copyright violations for writing a program that lets users of Adobe Systems’ eBook Reader get around copyright protections imposed by electronic-book publishers.”

something worth noting perhaps, is the ap’s use of term “copyright protection” in lieu of “copy protection.” of, course, this type of newspeak has been going on for quite some time now. unfortunately, over time, the intellectual property, specifically copyright laws have been shifting along with (or, as Orwell argues, as a result of) the shift in vocabulary.

of course, most people don’t really spend much time thinking about it, i suppose. and at the risk of being overly redundant, i’ll mention once again how few people, even at a senior class college level, whose livelihoods more or less depend on these very ip laws, none were familiar with basic intellectual property issues, much less the recent developments and shifts in copyright models. (when i gave my short presentation and asked for a raise of hands on familiarity with the topic, none came up).

how long did this take me to write? way too frickin long.

so, i got back from taiwan, safe and sound, which was a great experience. i suppose i’ll write more about it and post up pictures when i have some time to unwind. but, i have some major work to do over the next few days…

so i decided to buy an ibook, but um, it’s sort of a joke. osx barely runs, so i’m not very hopeful. truthfully, i don’t need much, just a machine that can run for a few hours between charges and can run apache and emacs. well, we’ll see how it goes this weekend i suppose. i’m glad i bought this at a place i can return this though. i’m 99% sure it’s going back after my trip.

speaking of my trip, after a few hours on and off priceline i was able to get a ticket, from LAX to Bradley for a friend’s wedding for this weekend. originally i was bidding $150, and while i suspect that eventually might have come through, i was getting a bit impatient. all in all, not a bad deal.

in other news, i finally got to see code red up close. one of my uncle’s friends owns an internet cafe and they need some help cleaning codered 2/3 from their w2k server.

so now i get to play away for free, although i discovered that playing cs is difficult when you can’t understand the screens to reassign the keys.
