in my fa402 design class we’re doing a little cell phone design project. the prof, greg thomas is a nice guy, but i’m a bit disappointed i’m not gaining tons of insight in class as far as going hard-core on information/interaction design. still, it does give me an excuse to do some reading.
for purposes of the project, i’m designing a next generation phone based on a traditional form factor and with a low-resolution screen. my “killer app” for the device is that it’s bluetooth enabled.
- The Psychology of Menu Selection: Designing Cognitive Control at the Human/Computer Interface – it’s from 1991, but that’s good. directly applicable to low res, key driven input
- assessing the usability of a ui standard – old nielsen / thovtrup paper
- univ south alabama ite 474: human computer interface notes – this took a whole semester? yikes.
- uc berkeley cs160 touchphone task analysis and interface sketches – this is more impressive
- uc berkeley cs160 touchphone homepage – nice… should definitely look at everything else
- web techniques 2001/02 – lo and behold, some usability articles
- sfgate: consumers pay price for internet phone convenience – some wap issues
- useit: mobile phones: europe’s next minitel? – jakob tackles phones, and makes a rather good argument against mobile phones – if the wireless web is the future (hopefully wap will die a painful death by then)
- useit: wap field study findings – tests corroborate that wap does indeed suck
- norman nielsen wap usability report – has some good links at the bottom of the page
- uidesign.net whitepaper, solving the context problem for wireless design – designing personas for use cases: “lifestyle snapshots”. uidesign.net is a nice site, never been here before
- lotus unified messaging – “An advanced message management solution for all media types, providing access to any message, anytime, anywhere, from any device.” is a good idea
- escribe wireless and mobile technology articles – links of some good articles.
- /. how much didigtal tool convergence is possible? – very interesting comments. but since it’s archived, it’s difficult to sort the good from the bad.

i’m using my blog to organize my thoughts a lot more now that my computer is indisposed. i think i definitely will have to try to finish my cm/km app soon to help categorize some of this spew. art center graphic design faculty, art center digital media faculty
