Great post, makes me want to try the g2, and the pre (again). But I'm pretty happy in iPhone 3G land a year later.

It's really too bad about the app approval process over at Apple, I've read this time and time again. I'm going to see a few of those guys from Apple tomorrow if you want me to deliver any "feedback."

I thought it was funny when you mentioned diminished goodwill "not as much as when I had to admin a labful of OS9 Macs", I'm dating myself here but when I was in my 4th year at UC I admin'd a bunch of grad labs that must have had OS 7.5+. I must have had 30 macs in the labs + more individual workstations and it was a like a full time job re-installing the OS and disabling extensions. I realize now that it was shortly thereafter, ~ pre-2000 that I became a PC person for many, many years. What a piece of junk that OS was for quite a while, and now 10 years later I'm starting to see the light and come back around. Way to go Steve!

Yeah, it's really disappointing, the bad UI seems to be baked in at every level. HTC's Sense UI looks interesting, if only for the better widgets (looks like the mother of all weather widgets there), but I'm not getting my hopes up in terms of responsiveness or overall usability (I'm sure that someone will hack a ROM soon to flash on the G2, so it'll be worth poking around with).

It's nice to see a confirmation about the G2's interface. I got one at the Google I/O conference and I have to admit that it took me a while to realize that it wasn't just hard to use because it's different, it's just not well designed. Like you say, it's a UI designed by programmers and it clearly needs a good UI designer's makeover.

On the other hand, I'm extremely cheap, and the phone it replaced was some super cheap Samsung that had literally no functionality beyond being a phone ($30 with a pay as you go account). So it's been a fun toy and it's great that it's unlocked because I can continue to be a skin flint and use my pay as you go account ($25 every other month; probably some high cost per minute).

I wish there was a good weather widget. And I really wish there was a way to sync it with our calendar at work, Oracle Calendar.
